You’ve got your degree, and the hunt for a job is on now that summer is winding down. What are you doing as a recent grad to find a job? You may have had your life long plan perfectly painted out and now, chances are, you’ve headed home and are searching vigorously for a job. If there was a time to put your creative skills to the test, now is that time. Now more than ever, innovative thinking can help new grads find success right out of college, even in a pandemic that wiped out the job market. Let’s look on the bright side.

Job Market

The job market has taken a quick turn from having an abundant amount of job opportunities for new grads to Great Depression levels of unemployment. Though this is the reality of the market and world we are in, internships and entry level positions are starting to crop back up. Employers are sharing advice, recommending that grads remain proactive despite the hardships. Your dream job may not be open but other positions are out there for you to apply to in the meantime.

“I would encourage grads to continue to network, take online coursework if possible, and continue to build and augment their resumes so when the market does turn around, they are right there and ready to get that dream opportunity,” says AnnElizabeth Konkel, an economist at the Indeed Hiring Lab.

You may be pleasantly surprised to find out that your degree qualifies you for a lot more than you think. Networking and talking about experiences or projects you accomplished while in college could be how you get your foot in the door at a new company. Adding recruiters and hiring managers on Linkedin is an even better way to gain traction on your job search. You have to stay positive and persistent. Think outside of the box, you’re looking for SOMETHING, not McDonalds but something that can eventually lead you to the position or company you’ve dreamed of.

Job Search

It’s time to reconsider your job search and the parameters you are putting around it. Especially during this pandemic, you have more flexibility in your job search. With the way of the world, many positions are remote. Therefore, you’re no longer limited to the location you are currently living in. Search for remote opportunities across the U.S and you will have much more show up in available positions.

Now, if you’ve been on this search for a long time and are still not having any luck. You should take AnnElizabeths advice and consider continuing your education. Take online courses to become more of an expert in your field or simply keep your brain stimulated so you’re not 6 months out of school having forgotten everything you learned.
