Well… You Learn Something New Every Day!

Ways everyone can continue to learn something new and the reasons why it’s important. 

It used to be that people with a high school education got jobs in factories, and people with college educations got jobs in offices.  You worked your way up the corporate ladder and retired at 63 with a nice pension and 2 kids who were off doing the EXACT SAME THING.  

No more. 

Entrepreneurship and innovation, as well as the disruption brought on by the gig economy, have changed the career trajectory for those with a desire to self-educate and seek out other paths to success. 

Education no longer means graduation from a business-specific program. In a recent survey from Goldman-Sachs, researchers noticed that business growth is achieved by business owners with all types of educational backgrounds. 

Think about the skills that really make a difference: 

• Leadership & Communication skills
• Time management
• Research and Analytics skills
• Public Speaking ability
• Tech skills

As AI takes on the mundane tasks no one wants to do, the “soft skills” of EQ, leadership and the ability to motivate others will come more and more to the fore in the hiring process.  And those are not the skills being taught in 4 year colleges (at least not in most colleges. The companies who are revolutionizing the workplace know that leadership and skill building are essential to keeping a motivated workforce.  An engaged, empowered workforce is 68% more productive than a neutral or unengaged workforce. Zappos and Facebook invest heavily in their own employees’ education. They promote from within and support their staff to learn new skills that they then bring back to the company.

There’s one more element to being a lifelong learner… Humility. Humility is essential to learning. 

After all, if you think you know it all, there’s nothing left to learn! To really take the time to look at your career choices, assess if there are areas where you can sharpen your skills or areas where you have not examined growth opportunities is an important step in choosing the right learning program. 

There’s no time like the present to sharpen existing skills or gain new ones.  There are many paths to success.  The one that’s wrong is the path of inaction.  So get learning!
